The city took its distinctive name (which means "place of many crows") from the station first taken up by Robert Holt Best in 1832, the first land in the area to be permanently occupied by settlers.
The Best family were early pioneers of Australia’s wool industry.
(Thanks to Marilyn Longmuir, who provided more historical information about the name of the city. She provided this information from "Reader’s Digest Illustrated Guide to Australian Places [1993: Reader’s Digest, Surrey Hills, NSW], p. 225.")
